JOB SUMMARY:

The Farm Manager is responsible and accountable for the day to day and overall operations, management, leadership and direction of KISRA’s Paradise farm/s and reports directly to the CEO to further the mission, programs, and activities of KISRA and its farming and healthy food access efforts. 

 

The Farm Manager will develop and manage all aspects of Paradise Farms crop productions.  This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of agricultural skills and farm management and a passionate commitment to providing specific foods for improved public health.  The Farm Manager is involved in providing general oversight, technical assistance, strategic planning, production oversight in all aspects of KISRA’s farming and healthy food access initiatives.  The Farm Manager is also involved in ensuring maximum yields, organizing farm administration and operations and managing staff.  The position requires both technical and practical competence as well as the ability to make sound associated business decisions as it relates to farm production and operations with an emphasis on maintaining all regulatory requirements.  Farm Manager must demonstrate knowledge of: food production, ability to work under stress, supervisory skills and management ability, self-motivation and ability to motivate others. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES AND TASKS) AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  • Ensure the proper day to day functioning and operations of all KISRA Paradise Farms operations. 

  • Oversee the purchase of needed supplies to ensure proper farming operations that meet production expectations such as seeds, nutrients, equipment, chemicals and other supplies. 

  • Routinely inspecting equipment and facilities to ensure proper functioning. 

  • Ensuring the maintenance and repair of all farm buildings, greenhouses, machinery and equipment. 

  • Overseeing and implementing daily activities of farm staff including training, corrective action and performance evaluation

  • Planning farm activities for program participants and volunteers.

  • Develop regionally-appropriate indoor and outdoor sustainable agriculture production with project partners and farm staff. 

  • Ensuring adherence to all regulatory guidelines and standards regarding farms and produce/crops including GAP.

  • Maintain Paradise Farms GAP Certification. 

  • Ensuring that products/crops are ready and prepared for deadlines such as available markets. 

  • Ensuring that health and safety standards are implemented and enforced on all Paradise Farms sites. 

  • Directs, coordinates and assists (as necessary) all worker activities such as planting, irrigation, harvesting and record keeping.

  • Assist in the development of sales plans, confers with purchasers and arranges for sale of crops while interfacing with customers as necessary with assistance from Food Hub Marketing Specialist. 

  • Records information regarding production, farm management practices, etc. and prepares reports as required and/or requested.    

  • Responsible for planning, establishing and implementing production targets and schedules. 

  • Work with outside resources and organizations to establish partnerships that support KISRA’s farming and healthy food access efforts. 

  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of KISRA

  • Attends and participates in meetings with KISRA’s community partners and collaborators as required. 

  • Provide outreach presentations regarding KISRA’s farming and healthy food access work as required. 

  • Ensure fiscally sound operations of Paradise Farms by assisting in the development of and adherence to established budgets and budgetary criteria.

Participants’ personal information is not shared with anyone outside of KISRA without their signed consent.  KISRA and Paradise Farms trade and operational information is not to be shared outside of the organization without prior approval of CEO.  Violation of this confidentiality can result in corrective action, up to and including dismissal according to KISRA policy and procedures.

 

RESOURCES AND METHODS:

Employee must know how to use a Microsoft Windows-based computer and software applications needed to perform duties (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the Internet).  The individual must be familiar with the following office equipment:  copier, fax machine, shredder, and scanner. The individual must also be familiar with (or be willing to learn) alternative farming methods such as hydroponic or aeroponic farming.   

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time, driving or riding in a car, bus or van and interacting with clients at the appropriate eye level or other duties as assigned. The usual requirements in an office and farm environment may require lifting boxes of supplies, equipment and occasional adjustments of office furniture and farming tools/equipment.  Frequent pushing, pulling, lifting and/or moving up to 30lbs without assistance.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES:

Employee must be willing to work outside in all weathers and demonstrate patience to undertake various sorts of practical, sometimes, repetitive tasks. 

Employee must have reliable transportation and be able to travel throughout WV.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to multi task and perform each duty satisfactorily.  Ability to read and analyze is required in order to prepare all required reports to comprehend complex manuals and regulatory requirements.  The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge in managing farm operations, supervising and developing employees and dealing with a broad range of farming applications.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES:

Directly supervises all Farm Workers and Food Hub Marketing Specialist. Responsible for the direction and coordination of duties for Paradise Farms.  Carry out the supervisory responsibilities in accordance with KISRA policy, procedures, and applicable laws.  The responsibilities include interviewing; training; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems of staff. 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the KISRA CEO.

 

REVIEW PROCESS:

Annual performance evaluation reviews will be conducted by the KISRA CEO.

 

EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE:

Required: High School education or GED equivalency, driver’s license.  Previous hands-on farming experience and technical knowledge. 

 

Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in agricultural science/engineering, crop management, farm business management, horticulture or other closely related degree.  Two (2) years of staff management and/or supervision.  Experience in the not- for-profit sector and working with disadvantaged populations.

  • Possess a valid WV Driver’s License.

  • Ability to travel during the work day.

  • An individual who can operate effectively with peers and other associates within a demanding work environment.

  • Good analytical skills and common sense.

 

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Selling to or operating a food hub; demonstrate passion for community and personal development; mechanical, construction or welding skills.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITIES:

All other duties as assigned by CEO.
